Nacon’s Benoit Clerc Voices Concerns Over Games Industry Oversaturation

In a recent interview, Benoit Clerc, Head of Publishing at Nacon, addressed the concerning issue of oversaturation in the games industry. He highlighted the importance of strong marketing strategies for games to make an impact amidst the cacophony of indie titles and AAA blockbusters.

The Overwhelming Number of Games

Clerc expressed concern about the increasing number of games flooding the market. Last year alone, there were a staggering 14,532 games released – that’s approximately 39 games per day, just on one platform. This overwhelming choice can put immense pressure on gamers.

Marketing Challenges and Success Stories

Nacon has experienced both ends of this spectrum. The November release of Robocop: Rogue City surpassed expectations and currently holds a 9/10 rating on Steam, based on 5,500 reviews. On the other hand, the failure of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, developed by Nacon’s subsidiary Daedalic Entertainment, was a significant blow. This highly anticipated game ultimately became one of the most notable flops in recent years, leading to the cancellation of a follow-up project and the closure of Daedalic’s game development arm.

Is the Industry Straining Under the Weight of Too Many Games?

The question remains: is the industry being unduly stressed by this constant demand for innovation and competition between indie developers and AAA studios?
