The Last of Us Online Multiplayer Game Officially Canceled by Naughty Dog

After much anticipation, Naughty Dog has officially announced the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, their multiplayer game spin-off from The Last of Us series.

Naughty Dog’s Statement on The Last of Us Online

“We know many of you have been looking forward to updates on the project we’ve called The Last of Us Online,”

the statement reads.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share this news: We’ve made the difficult decision to cease development on The Last of Us Online.

The Evolution of The Last of Us Online

“Since the start of production on The Last of Us Part 2, we’ve been developing The Last of Us Online in parallel,”

Naughty Dog explains. “During that time, the game’s vision became more refined and satisfying for us. We were enthusiastic about the direction in which we were headed.”

The Scope of The Last of Us Online

“However, in scaling up to full production,”

they continued. “The massive scope of our ambition became clear. To release and support The Last of Us Online, we’d have to dedicate all our studio resources towards post-launch content for years to come.

“This would severely impact future single-player games, so we had a choice: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on our heritage as a single-player narrative games developer.”
